Ferguson: Rooney will be here next year

rooney-3Wayne Rooney will still be at Manchester United next season, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, even though the 27-year-old did not start the game against Real Madrid.

Speculation about the former Everton star's future intensified this week after Ferguson opted to start with Nani, Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck for Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second leg clash with Real Madrid rather than Rooney.

Rooney did come on as a second-half substitute against Jose Mourinho's side as United crashed out of European football's premier competition after losing the second leg at Old Trafford 2-1.

When asked about Rooney, Ferguson replied: "He'll be here next year. You can have my word on that.

"There is no issue between myself and Wayne Rooney. To suggest we don't talk is nonsense.

"He understood the reasons (for not starting against Real Madrid) completely. Tactically we got it right. We don't always but we did then.

"I left out Shinji Kagawa after he scored a hat-trick. I thought I would get more stick for that."

Rooney, who since moving to Old Trafford in 2004 has found the net 166 times in 343 games for United, will be involved in Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea.

Rooney is 5.00 to open the scoring against Rafa Benitez's side in a game United can be backed at 13.00 to win 3-1. Manchester United are available at 3.25 to win this season's FA Cup, while Chelsea are 6.50.
