Jagielka to have ankle surgery

david-moyesEverton manager David Moyes fears that he will be without the services of Phil Jagielka for a lengthy spell after the defender sustained an ankle injury against Reading.

The 30-year-old former Sheffield United player will have to undergo surgery on the damaged ankle and could miss England's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro later this month.

Moyes was unhappy with the challenge made by Adam Le Fondre that led to Jagielka having to be replaced after just five minutes of Everton's 3-1 victory against the Royals.

The Scot said afterwards: "It's a bad one, he's going to have surgery to stitch it up.

"At the time I thought it was a poor challenge. I've genuinely not seen it again. Maybe if I see it again I will think differently. I'm disappointed because Jags is such a good player."

England face San Marino on 22nd March and Montenegro four days later while Everton have an FA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Wigan Athletic on 9th March.

Everton can be backed at 13.00 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and at 5.00 to win the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Le Fondre apologised to Jagileka via a tweet on Saturday evening, which read: "Fans were brilliant today. Shame about result. Everton were class. Thoughts with Jags. Never meant to catch him. Caught him late and apologised."
