Keane to miss Austria showdown

robbie-keaneVeteran striker Robbie Keane has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's crunch World Cup qualifier against Austria by a calf strain.

Both the Irish and Austria are one point behind second-placed Sweden in Group C, as the countries prepare to face off at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Tuesday evening.

Ireland, who are 2.15 to win the game, 2.50 to keep a clean sheet and 5.50 to qualify for the 2014 finals, will have to do without Keane, with Wolves frontman Kevin Doyle drafted in as a replacement.

A FAI statement read: "A scan confirmed that Robbie is suffering from calf strain after Friday's game against Sweden. Kevin Doyle has been called up in place of Keane.

"The manager has spoken to Kevin and he will link up with the squad in time for training in Malahide."

Head coach Giovanni Trapattoni has plenty of options for the clash with Austria, with West Brom's Shane Long his first-choice attacker.

Doyle, Conor Sammon, Andy Keogh and Simon Cox are also in contention for a starting spot for an Irish side in good heart after a goalless draw in Swden on Friday evening.
