Raikkonen races to Melbourne glory - Bet on Formula 1

kimi-raikkonenKimi Raikkonen hopes his success in the Australian Grand Prix will be the first of many this season.

The Lotus driver's two-stop strategy proved crucial as he beat Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in an entertaining race at Melbourne's Albert Park.

Alonso made three pit-stops and had to settle for second place while Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who had started the race from pole position, was third ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes.

Red Bull's Mark Webber was sixth, ahead of Force India's Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta, while Jenson Button was ninth and the second Lotus of Romain Grosjean completed the top ten.

Raikkonen had started in seventh place on the grid but soon moved up to fourth and took the lead on lap 23 as Alonso, Massa and Vettel made their second of three stops.

The Finn's final stop came on lap 34 and he was then able to hold off Alonso's challenge to emerge victorious.

Afterwards, Raikkonen said: "Our plan was to do two stops and, although it's always difficult in the first races to know when to stop and not to, we got it exactly right. We followed the plan and it worked out perfectly. I could save the tyres and go fast if I needed.

"It was one of the easiest races I have done to win. Hopefully we can have many more of these races."

Raikkonen is 4.33 to win next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix and is 4.50 to win the 2013 drivers' title.
