Smalling refuses to rest on laurels

Chris Smalling continues to be haunted by last season's slip.

chris-smalling-2Chris Smalling admits Manchester United are still looking over their shoulders even though they have a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The former Fulham defender insists that, while the pundits have already anointed them as this season's champions, the United players are refusing to take their foot off the pedal.

With ten games remaining and 30 points to play for, United are still haunted by last season's collapse which saw them pipped for the crown by Manchester City with the final kick.

The Red Devils face Reading on Saturday evening at Old Trafford and will know by then how City have fared at Everton in the earlier lunchtime kick-off.

Manchester City are 2.05 to beat Everton at Goodison Park, while Manchester United are available at 13.00 to thrash managerless Reading 5-0, with Smalling available at 29.00 to open the scoring against the Royals at Old Trafford.

Smalling admits: "Everybody is a bit more cautious after what happened last season, where there were only a handful of games left but we threw away eight points.

"If it hadn't happened last season I don't think we'd be quite so cautious about talking about it, but we are definitely determined to maintain the gap this time.

"I don't think the manager would be too happy if we didn't. And we would be left kicking ourselves."
