Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella is confident the Viola will perform to their usual standards against Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday despite already qualifying for the next round of the Europa League.
The Gigliati have already booked their ticket to the next round but Montella stated that his side have reason to push for first place in Group E.
“Certainly finishing first is extra motivation in order to avoid the club’s that are coming from the Champions League in the next round,” he stated at his pre-match press conference.
“We must five our response on the pitch after a defeat in the championship [against Udinese]: we must get on the right path and win.
“It is important to analyse Sunday’s defeat and understand where we went wrong. We had the wrong approach on how to get back into the game and worked hard, but in an inefficient fashion.
“We played an ugly second half while doing well in the first. And I even told that to the squad on Sunday.”
Giuseppe Rossi and Borja Valero have been left at home in order to rest but the tactician is confident his side will play well regardless.
“Our position allows us to rest some players, but I am absolutely confident the team will play its usual level of football
“I am satisfied with what I have seen so far. Our objective in the Europa League is to go as far as possible, ideally to the final.”
Striker Mario Gomez had hoped to make his comeback for the Viola but a recent check-up in Germany confirmed an inflammation of the knee after his recent surgery.
“We know that there can be complications with some injuries.
“I won’t cry about it. We know there are players who can benefit from his forced absence.”
