Betting on football is a huge and growing global industry worth billions of pounds per year.

Football betting - the global gambling industry worth billions

Gambling on football is a huge and growing global industry worth billions of pounds per year.
While having a flutter at the bookies has long been associated with horse racing, the growth of online betting could see football challenge that position in Britain.
However, betting on football is now a worldwide phenomenon with much of the trading carried out on illegal markets in Asia, where the huge sums wagered bring with it the threat of match-fixing.
Here we look at the rise in betting, the risks of corruption and the history of cheating in the sport.

How much is the sports betting industry worth?

"The current estimations, which include both the illegal markets and the legal markets, suggest the sports match-betting industry is worth anywhere between $700bn and $1tn (£435bn to £625bn) a year," says Darren Small, director of integrity at betting and sports data analysts Sportradar.
About 70% of that trade has been estimated to come from trading on football.
Sportradar has contracts to monitor betting on some 55,000 matches a year, running algorithms which cover 350 global bookmakers, to spot suspicious betting patterns. Concerns are raised with about 1% of fixtures monitored.
"It doesn't sound a great deal but it is still 500 or so matches that are potentially fixed and we are talking potentially millions of pounds in turnover on these matches which is running through criminal activities," says Small.
International crime investigation body Interpol says its Operation Soga has carried out more than 2,300 raids on properties worldwide as part of its drive to disrupt match fixers.
It has seized over $27m (£16.8m) in cash, and closed down illegal gambling dens which handled bets worth more than $2bn (£1.2bn).

What are people betting on?

While betting in Asia is usually restricted to a limited range, the array of options in Europe are far more than the traditional straightforward choices of win, lose or draw.
Licensed bookies offer upwards of 200 different markets on matches around the globe.
You can bet on the first and last goalscorer, the correct score, the half-time score, number of goals, whether there will be a sending-off, a hat-trick, penalty or the amount of corners.
Some markets are time specific - offering odds on whether there might be a goal, card, corner or penalty in the first five minutes of the match, for example.

Is betting on football a new phenomenon?

The Football Pools started 90 years ago this year. Within months, hundreds of thousands of fans were filling in weekly coupons, attempting to predict Saturday afternoon's results in the hope of winning cash prizes.
In 1961, Viv Nicholson, a factory worker from Castleford, won a £152,000 jackpot,  equivalent to almost £5m today.
More than £3.2bn in winnings has been paid to 61m people over the years and more than 500,000 people still play the pools each week.

What has changed in recent years?

The growth of the internet and mobile devices with quick access to odds has made betting generally much more accessible.
Satellite television channels and increased coverage of live football matches around the world has increased interest and opportunity.
With it has come the widespread use of "in-running" betting, where punters can stake money on the action as it happens - for example, who will score the next goal, with odds fluctuating on the pattern of play.
Online football betting has mushroomed since it first became significant before the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

What is illegal betting?

There is a ban on sports betting in some countries, while elsewhere illegal betting syndicates offer better odds, making the potential winnings more attractive.
Laws vary in different countries. In Singapore, for example, it is legal to place a wager on a football match at a "pools store", but online sports betting is banned.
Aside from the concerns over match-fixing, there are other financial issues associated with illegal betting, including transactions that are unaccounted for and cost governments hundreds of millions in lost tax revenue, while they also damage the profits of legal bookmakers.
Gamblers take their own risks. With no records of bets, the arrangement is based on mutual trust.

Is football match-fixing a new issue?

Incidents involving British footballers are relatively isolated, although betting scandals go back as far as 1915 when seven players were banned after Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-0 in a match at Old Trafford where the visitors missed a penalty.
An investigation was launched after complaints from bookmakers following a run of bets on the correct scoreline, with a goal in each half.
Nearly 50 years later, eight players were jailed for offences surrounding match-fixing, including Sheffield Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by Ipswich in 1964.
A series of floodlight failures affected top-flight English matches in 1997 and later saw a businessman convicted of taking part in an Asian betting scam.
The fraudster, who had links to the Chinese Triad underworld, was found guilty of plotting to black out a Charlton-Liverpool game.
Two previous matches - West Ham v Crystal Palace and Wimbledon against Arsenal - saw the floodlights fail when the scores were level, a result favourable to a Far East betting syndicate, but cases of match-fixing in Britain are relatively rare.
In 2006, Italian sides Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio were relegated for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal - although after appeals, only Juve were actually demoted.
Earlier this year, 58 Chinese football officials were given match-fixing bans and last month police in Singapore arrested 14 people said to be part of a crime gang involved in global football match-fixing.
There have also been cases of cheating in Malaysia and South Korea while last month six people - including four Britons - were charged with betting-related corruption in Australia.

What are the authorities doing to tackle match-fixing?

In February this year, the European Union's law enforcement agency Europol said it was investigating the fixing of 680 matches across the world - in Europe, Asia and South America.
A Europol statement said the conspiracy originated in Asia and involved at least 425 individuals - including match referees, club officials, players and members of organised criminal gangs.
It also said that, in Germany-based matches alone, criminals wagered £13.8m (16m euros) on rigged matches and made £6.9m in profits.
Three months later Michel Platini, president of European football's governing body Uefa, called for the establishment of a European sports police force to deal with match-fixing, hooliganism and doping - something he had first suggested in 2007.

He also asked that if a continent-wide police force was not possible, individual countries could introduce legislation to punish those guilty of corruption.
Meanwhile, in 2011 Interpol and football's governing body Fifa announced a 10-year joint initiative aimed at educating people about the risks with workshops, conferences and online tutorials.
Fifpro, the worldwide professional footballers' union, last year launched Don't Fix It, a prevention and education programme aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of match-fixing and reducing conditions that lead to it occurring.
Dr Andy Harvey of Birkbeck, University of London, is carrying out research for the Don't Fix It programme. He said: "In many cases the players are the victims of match-fixing rather than just the perpetrators of it.
"The main instigators of it, as has been the case in Italy in the past, are when clubs have been infiltrated by criminal gangs, like has happened in eastern European countries, or where players have been groomed by criminal gangs.
"This very often happens because the players are vulnerable. The European bodies, particularly Uefa, have to get to grips with governances at a national level and make sure that clubs are owned by fit and proper people."

How hard is it to fix a football match?

With 22 players on the pitch, substitutes and managers, it would appear on the surface that several people would need to be in on the scam.
However, mistakes in key positions can sometimes be enough to land a gamble.
Reckless tackles leading to penalties, a flawed goalkeeping performance or deliberate own goals have been noted in suspect matches.
Referees can also be targeted as demonstrated by bans handed down by Fifa following matches between Latvia and Bolivia, and Estonia and Bulgaria, in 2011.
The games, which took place as a double-header in Turkey and only attracted about 100 spectators, produced seven goals - all scored from penalties.
Six officials involved in the games were found guilty of "passive corruption" and "unlawfully influencing match results" by Fifa's disciplinary committee.

Mourinho making Blues tick in tune

Mourinho making Blues tick in tune
Chelsea head to Newcastle on Saturday on the back of a six-game winning run and knowing victory would take them top of the Barclays Premier League, for a few hours at least.
Mourinho made 10 changes for Tuesday night's 2-0 Capital One Cup win at Arsenal and will have to disappoint the majority of that team when he picks his starting line-up for the lunchtime kick-off.
But as he tuned up for the trip to Newcastle, Mourinho put their recent fine form down to a squad of players who are all singing from the same hymn sheet.

Arsenal run into Liverpool
After consecutive home defeats, Premier League leaders Arsenal will look to reassert their title credentials when they host third-place Liverpool in a top-of-the-table affair on Saturday.
Arsenal have been in superb form in the league, winning seven and drawing one of their last eight games to establish a two-point lead over Chelsea at the summit.
However, after losing at home to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and then falling to Chelsea in the League Cup, questions are being asked about their capacity to go the distance.

"A big team is a state of soul, a collective soul, and at this moment all my players have this," said the Blues boss.

"It doesn't matter to the soul if you score or don't score, if you play well or don't play well. It is a good squad and good people, and we try our best every match.

"It is the ambition to do well for the team, and the ones who didn't play who are waiting for their turn,

"It's what they all do - the objectives of the team are more important than the individual.

"They have individual ambitions and targets - they want to go to World Cup, to play every game, they don't want to go on the bench - but the team is more important.

"We are a team. I can speak individually to any of them but normally I just speak to my team."

One player to buy into this philosophy appears to be Fernando Torres, who is finally showing glimpses of the player Chelsea spent £50million on when they bought him from Liverpool nearly three years ago.

Torres has scored three goals in his past two matches, including the winner against Manchester City last weekend.

Yet Mourinho has once again played down his role in the Spain striker's sudden, and unexpected, resurgence.

"I repeat I did nothing," said the former Real Madrid coach. "I did what I always do in trying to get the best out of the players, but in a very normal way.

In Liverpool, they face a team brimming with confidence after a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in which Luis Suarez claimed a hat-trick and Daniel Sturridge scored with an extravagant chip.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who will recall stars including Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud to his starting XI, says the game represents an ideal opportunity for his side to show their worth.

“We know the games. We have to respond well against Liverpool,” said the Frenchman.

“We are in a strong position in the league and have a good opportunity at home, and we have to turn this round. Away from home we are very solid, but at home you know it’s important and vital to win the big games.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho has been given the “all clear” to return to action, having been sidelined since September 16 with a shoulder problem.

Arsenal could be in second place by the time the game kicks off at the Emirates Stadium, if Chelsea win at Newcastle United in Saturday’s early match.

The Europa League champions won all six of their games in October, scoring 18 goals, but right-back Cesar Azpilicueta has warned his team-mates not to get carried away.

“It’s true that Arsenal have two really difficult games, but we don’t need to look to the other teams,” said the Spaniard, who opened the scoring in his side’s 2-0 League Cup win at the Emirates on Tuesday.

“We play in a difficult stadium in Newcastle and we know it’s always a hard game there.”

Newcastle enjoyed a 3-2 win over Chelsea in last season’s corresponding fixture in February, but they may be hampered by the after-effects of Wednesday’s 2-0 extra-time defeat at home to Manchester City in the League Cup. City are six points off the pace after going down 2-1 at Chelsea last weekend and will hope to make up ground on the teams above them when they tackle Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium.

Joe Hart is fighting to hold onto his place as City’s first-choice goalkeeper, having committed the latest in a succession of blunders to hand Chelsea victory at Stamford Bridge.

FC Barcelona host city rivals Espanyol

FC Barcelona host city rivals RCD Espanyol today evening as Barça head coach Gerardo Martino hopes to follow up his El Clasico victory with a win in his Catalan derby debut.

Barcelona are off to a tremendous start. While the season is still young, it seems like a special campaign could be developing at Camp Nou. Barca hope to keep that positive vibe alive in a La Liga clash with Espanyol.

The Blaugrana are unbeaten through 11 league matches with an eye-popping plus-26 goal differential. Although Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are doing their best to keep pace atop the table, Lionel Messi and Co. have looked nearly unstoppable at times.

Espanyol should provide a good test.

The Periquitos have already defeated Atletico, showing they can play the strong defensive style it takes to remain competitive with top opponents. Expect a similar approach against Barcelona.

Let's take a glance at all the key information for the La Liga encounter, followed by a breakdown of the top storyline and a match prediction.

Espanyol were able to keep the Atletico Madrid attack at bay when they faced off a couple weeks ago. Even though the Colchoneros won the possession battle, they struggled to break down the Periquitos' back line and failed to create many scoring chances.

It's going to take an even more extraordinary effort for Espanyol to slow down Barcelona, which are averaging three goals per match in league play. The amount of attacking talent on the Barca squad is enough to trouble even the best defensive groups.

Lionel Messi and Neymar grab most of the headlines, but it's the depth that has allowed the club to enjoy such consistent success in the early going. Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez, Pedro and Xavi have all found a way to make a key impact at one time or another.

That's what makes beating Barcelona so difficult, especially at Camp Nou. A club may be able to slow down two or three players, but successfully defending the entire attack for 90 minutes is an uphill battle to say the least.

Espanyol will likely attempt to slow the pace and prevent Barcelona from completely dominating possession, but it's much easier said than done.

Barcelona didn't suffer from an emotional letdown after a hard-fought victory over rival Real Madrid; they bounced right back to easily handle Celta Vigo. They are operating like a well-oiled machine right now, and it's tough to imagine Espanyol stopping the run.

The Periquitos might be able to build the defensive wall for awhile, but eventually Barcelona should be able to break through.

They have too much talent and are in too good of form to pick against them right now, particularly while playing at home.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Valdes; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Montoya; Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta; Alexis, Messi, Neymar

Espanyol (4-2-3-1): Casilla; Lopez, Colotto, Moreno, Fuentes; D. Lopez, Sánchez; Garcia, Thievy, Pizzi; Stuani

Massimiliano Allegri: "We must beat Lazio"

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has asked his struggling side to cut out avoidable errors in search of three points against Lazio today night.

Wednesday's clash will give two of Italy's biggest sides a chance to revive their season after making slow starts.

Lazio – who last won a league game against Milan at the venue in September 1989 thanks to Paolo Maldini's own goal - have struggled recently, winning just one of their last six matches in all competitions.

After winning three of their first five Serie A fixtures, they have fallen to seventh in the table, with a lack of goals a concern for head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

The Rome club have scored 14 goals in nine matches this season – only one side in the top half of the table has scored less – with only midfielder Antonio Candreva having netted more than two league goals, with a total of four strikes.

Lazio winger Senad Lulic (thigh) will not feature in the clash, while defenders Andre Dias (knee) and Vinicius (hamstring) will also miss out.

Milan will be hopeful a return to San Siro inspires them to victory after they fell to 10th in the table following a 3-2 defeat at Parma on Sunday.

Massimiliano Allegri's side are already 16 points adrift of table-toppers Roma and, despite the season still being in the opening quarter, a 19th Scudetto looks beyond them.

Their abysmal away form is largely to blame, with Sunday's loss just the latest in a string of disappointing results on the road.

Milan have won none of their five away matches this season, losing three and drawing two, while they have conceded 13 goals in the process.

"We keep making the same mistakes away from home," Allegri bemoaned after the loss to Parma.

"Mario Balotelli had a bad game. Now our race to get back near the top is getting tougher."

Milan can take some comfort in their home form, having won three of their four matches at San Siro this season, but they need more from their strikers.

Balotelli, Robinho and Alessandro Matri have scored a combined total of just six goals for a side who are badly missing young star Stephan El Shaarawy (foot) and Giampaolo Pazzini (knee).

Defenders Philippe Mexes (suspension), Daniele Bonera (knee) and Matias Silvestre (calf) will also miss the match.

This fixture has not been won by an away side in the last seven meetings, with Milan winning the most recent encounter 3-0 in March thanks to a Pazzini double.
