Paderborn prepare for the real Bayern

Paderborn prepare for the real Bayern

Bayern Munich will be aiming to get back to winning ways at Paderborn in the Bundesliga following their draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

The German champions were disappointed to be held goalless in Ukraine on Tuesday in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Pep Guardiola's side will be expected to bounce back this weekend after sporting director Matthias Sammer said the performance against Shakhtar did not reflect "the real Bayern Munich".

"Everyone can see we have room to improve before we reach peak form and that's the message for the next few days," he said. "We have to shift up a gear."

Bayern, who are currently eight points clear at the top of the table, beat Paderborn 4-0 in Munich in September.

Paderborn earned a vital win at Hanover last time out as they seek to avoid a swift return to the second division.

Their manager Andre Breitenreiter dismissed the theory that Bayern are not near their best by pointing out the result of the Bavarians' last league match.

"After their 8-0 win over Hamburg, I'm looking forward to seeing what awaits us," he said on Thursday.

Bayern were handed a boost on Thursday when midfielder Thiago Alcantara came through some light training following knee surgery. The 23-year-old Spanish international last played in March 2014.

Captain Philip Lahm also returned to training this week with a view to playing again in a month's time.

Mourinho urges players to ´forget Paris´

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has put the UEFA Champions League to the back of his mind ahead of this weekend's Premier League visit of Burnley.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has urged his players to "forget Paris" ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

The league leaders were held to a 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 UEFA Champions League tie on Tuesday - a match that was overshadowed by an alleged racist incident involving Chelsea fans on the French capital's Metro system.

And Mourinho wants to put thoughts of the return game to the back of his mind, with two Premier League matches and a League Cup final to contend with before the return fixture on March 11.

"I want to forget that [the second leg]," he is quoted as saying in the Evening Standard. "We have a final and Premier League matches to play, where every point is important.

"I want to forget Paris, it's finished."

Captain John Terry says it is important that everyone in the squad remains focused and points to Burnley's 2-2 draw at Manchester City in December as a warning signal as to what Saturday's visitors might be capable of.

"That's what it's all about - players digging deep at this time of year," he added. "We have been kind of lucky with injuries so far, but everyone got through the PSG game okay.

"We have a little bit of time, especially after the Burnley game, before we play the Capital One Cup final against Spurs.

"More importantly we are back in the Premier League this weekend for what is a massive three points.

"It is important we win and they [Burnley] have shown already at Man City that they're hungry and fighting.

"Where we and they are in the table means nothing. We will certainly be up for it."

Chelsea - seven points clear at the summit - are not thought to have any fresh injury concerns, while Burnley manager Sean Dyche welcomes Stephen Ward back from an ankle problem.

Star striker Danny Ings - who has scored five goals in his last six Premier League games - was reported to have travelled to Spain for talks with Real Sociedad recently, but Dyche insists his frontman is fully focused on helping Burnley avenge their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season.

"There is no concern from me," he said. "I have said all along, his performances make it quite obvious he is enjoying his football.

"He looks relaxed. One of the biggest things I have said to him for the last two years I have been here, other than tactical pointers, is smile and enjoy your football and there's no reason why he shouldn't do that.

"That's when he's at his best I feel and I think he's doing that now."

Returning pair set to boost Wenger

Wilshere-Chamberlain

Arsene Wenger could recall Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Arsenal's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Arsenal could be boosted by the return of Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain going into Saturday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.

Wilshere has not featured for Arsenal since late November due to an ankle injury while Oxlade-Chamberlain has been out for a month following a groin problem.

However, both could play a part for Wenger at Selhurst Park as Arsenal look to put the pressure on fourth-place Southampton, who play Liverpool on Sunday.

Wenger's men have won their last four meetings with Palace although this weekend the Frenchman will be without Aaron Ramsey (hamstring), Mikel Arteta (ankle) and Mathieu Debuchy (shoulder).

"Jack is fine. [Oxlade-Chamberlain] is close, he will join in normal training," Wenger told the club's official website.

"Ramsey is still out. The two other injuries are Arteta and Debuchy. Apart from that we have some uncertainties about [Mathieu] Flamini and [Hector] Bellerin - they are doubtful for Saturday. Everybody else is OK.

"Bellerin is his ankle and Flamini has a tight hamstring. We’ll see. We'll have tests [on Friday]."

Wenger's side have taken 12 points from their last possible 15, with a north London derby defeat their only real low point of recent weeks - form that has partly led Alan Pardew to describe the clash as a "bonus game" for his Palace side.

With Yannick Bolasie and Mile Jedinak only recently back from international competitions - the latter a doubt for this weekend due to an ankle knock - and Yaya Sanogo ineligible against his parent club, Pardew feels a draw would represent a major result for his side.

"I've had to be patient a little bit because Bolasie, Mile, [Marouane] Chamakh's had injuries and Yaya will obviously miss this game," he told reporters.

"We've not actually got it all together and I don't think this weekend we will.

"We're not quite there but by the time we get to West Ham, Southampton, we're going to be pretty close hopefully.

"So, this for us in a way is a bonus game, because no-one will expect us to get anything really.

"If we can get a point, or three points, it would be a massive boost for us."

James McArthur (thigh) and Jonathan Williams (groin) are also likely absentees as Palace look to pull further clear of danger, having obtained 10 points from a possible 15 since Pardew's arrival from Newcastle United.

Europa League: Young Boys vs Everton

Young Boys vs Everton

Everton will hope to recapture their form in Europe when they resume their Europa League campaign with a round of 32 first-leg encounter with Young Boys at Stade de Suisse in Bern on Thursday.

They are way off-pace from their initial domestic plans of a top-four finish as they currently sit in the bottom-half of the Premier League table with almost 20 points separating them from Champions League places. The Toffees are also struggling for league form, with just one win in six games.

Their frustrating domestic campaign is in stark contrast to their Europa League form. They lost just once in the group stages en route to winning Group H ahead of the likes of Wolfsburg, FC Krasnodar and Lille.

Roberto Martinez will no doubt be throwing everything Everton have into this competition as it represents the Toffees’ biggest chance of both finishing the season with silverware and qualifying for Champions League.

Young Boys can relate to Everton’s contrasting fortunes as they are also struggling for consistency having won just twice in their last six games in all competitions. Like Everton, they had an impressive run in the group stages winning seven of their 10 group games before finishing as runners-up behind Napoli.

The Swiss Super League outfit also boast a strong home record in Europe thanks to seven wins in their last seven matches at the Stade de Suisse. They have also scored 13 goals and conceded once on home turf in Europe this season.

Uli Forte could set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with top goalscorer Guillaume Hoarau leading the attack. Yuya Kubo could start in a deeper role as an attacking midfielder alongside Florent Hadergjonaj and Renato Steffen.

Milan Gajic and Sekou Sanogo Junior may be the holding midfielders in that formation.

Bryan Oviedo should continue to deputise at left-back in the absence of Baines while Gareth Barry may start in central midfield alongside Muhamed Besic as the two holding midfielders in a similar 4-2-3-1 formation for the Toffees.

In forward positions, Ross Barkley could start in the number 10 role with Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith flanking the England international in forming the three attacking midfielders behind Romelu Lukaku.

Everton have markedly improved their defensive performance in recent games, including their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea when they probably deserved to leave Stamford Bridge with something from the game.

They may need a similarly solid defensive performance with numbers behind the ball when defending. Everton also have a couple of decent technicians in possession so they may attempt to lower the tempo of the game through ball retention in certain periods of the game.

Preview: West Ham vs Manchester Utd

West Ham vs Manchester Utd

Manchester United travel to the capital on Sunday to take on West Ham looking to reclaim third place in the Premier League standings.

The Red Devils traded places in the table with Southampton, who secured a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday thanks to a last-gasp winner from Sadio Mane.

Louis van Gaal's side have the opportunity to leapfrog the Saints with a third successive win in the league, having beaten QPR and Leicester in their last two outings.

The Hammers have struggled for form of late, with last weekend's 2-0 loss to Liverpool seeing them take just nine points from their last eight top-flight encounters.

Sam Allardyce's men have managed only two wins in that run - triumphing 2-0 over the Foxes and 3-0 against Hull - which has left them six points adrift of the European places in eighth spot.

Allardyce has a defensive dilemma on his hands for the visit of United, with injuries to Winston Reid and James Collins (both hamstring) leaving him with just one fit centre-back.

However, Cheikhou Kouyate could be drafted in at the heart of defence after the Senegal midfielder recovered from an ankle problem.

Striker Andy Carroll is rated doubtful with an ankle knock he sustained against the Reds, while defender Doneil Henry and midfielder Diego Poyet both miss out through injury.

Van Gaal's injury woes have almost completely subsided, with midfielder Michael Carrick the only absentee due to a calf strain picked up in training last week.

Defender Jonny Evans and winger Ashley Young made their respective comebacks from injury on Tuesday in United's FA Cup replay success over Cambridge United.
