Manchester United v Bayern Munich Betting Preview

Manchester United will continue their Champions League campaign against Bayern Munich this evening, and their meeting with the German side comes at the worst possible time.
It’s hard to say there’s a good time to face Bayern Munich, but the Bavarians have just secured the Bundesliga title in record breaking fashion, and their one and only concern for the remainder of this season is the Champions League.
United’s concern is probably just not embarrassing themselves at the moment. A tough, tough season has piled the pressure on Moyes and the players at the club, and a hammering by Bayern will only worsen the situation.
Even the most hardened United fan will be expecting the worst this evening, but it’s key United keep tonight’s first leg competitive and they display the effort the fans will expect and deserve to see.
United will be without the services of experienced European campaigners Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie this evening, but Smalling and Fellaini are expected to return to the side.
Valencia and Rafael are also unlikely to be available, which affects the depth of United in wide areas, and could push Phil Jones to full back against Ribery.
Pep Guardiola has opted to rest Thiago Alcantara, whilst Dante, like Evra, is suspended for this evening’s first leg.
Bayern are going to line up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation that played such a big role in taking Barcelona apart on aggregate.
Lahm and Schweinsteiger are likely to isolate Rooney from the game and force two lines of four, whilst the setup allows Ribery and Robben to cheat and stay forward.
Ribery in particular could be the key, as I just don’t see Phil Jones having the pace, experience of the ability to trouble the Frenchmen at any point, and he’ll probably also have to deal with Robben at some point in the game.
Manchester United may have played some classics against Bayern over the years – most notably in 1999 in their dramatic Champions League final victory – but this current crop don’t even need mentioning in the same breath.
United face a tough task against the best team in the world over the last 12 months, and there’s a danger that this game could be well and truly over by the time they make the trip to Munich for the second leg.
