Midfield duo could miss Saturday’s match

Yaya Toure - Fernandinho

Manchester City could be without both Fernandinho and Yaya Toure for our match at the Etihad this Saturday.

Fernandinho suffered a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago and it’s not yet clear if he’ll recover in time to play.

Yaya, meanwhile, is playing in the Ivory Coast on Wednesday night and is not scheduled to return to Manchester until less than 24 hours before the match. With a huge Champions League game in Russia next Tuesday, Manuel Pellegrini will surely rest the former Barcelona man – just as he did against Ars*nal in September.

Of course, City have loads of options and in the absence of Yaya and Ferdy, they can call upon Fernando and Frank Lampard to play in the double-pivot.

All in all, this would probably be a good thing for Spurs. Yaya may not have been at his very best so far this season but he remains a formidable player, capable of single-handedly winning any match.

Fernandinho, on the other hand, has looked very sluggish this season and, according to WhoScored.com, has been dribbled past 17 times more than any other player in the league.

We’re likely play a containment and counter-attacking game at the home of the Champions and if their last line of midfield defence is so easily beaten (and coming off the back of a hamstring injury), we may have some joy.

City strength’s in depth means it won’t be an easy game whoever they field but I think the best we can hope for is a midfield pairing of Fernandinho and Lampard, with Yaya and the defensively-minded Fernando left out.
