Arsenal keen on relegated Scottish midfielder

James-McArthurArsenal are being linked with a summer swoop for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McArthur.

The Times claims Gunners chief Arsene Wenger is among a number of managers taking a keen interest in the 25-year-old.

And, the report goes on to claim that Arsenal hope they can persuade the player to stay in the Premier League following the Latics’ demise at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

McArthur has been one of Wigan’s star performers this season, and was influential on the road to FA Cup glory at the DW Stadium.

However, the Scottish international was unable to prevent his side from dropping down to the Npower Championship, and is now one of the club’s valuable assets that could be plucked away from the Lancashire outfit.

Arsenal got a first-hand look at the player earlier in the week, and could only have been impressed by the former Hamilton Academical starlet’s performance under pressure.

The Gunners remain relatively light in defensive-midfield, with injuries constantly leaving the north London outfit exposed in the position.

McArthur would add to Wenger’s options in the position, but isn’t the big-name signing that Arsenal fans will certainly be hoping for this summer.
