Berdych next for impressive Nadal

rafael-nadal-3Rafael Nadal showed that he is still a force to be reckoned with by thrashing Roger Federer 6-4 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The Spaniard secured his best victory since his recent return to action following an eight-month lay-off while he recovered from a knee injury, to set up a last-four encounter with Tomas Berdych.

Two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Nadal was far too good for last year's winner, completing his victory over Federer, who appeared to be struggling with a back injury, in just 84 minutes.

Afterwards Nadal said: "I played a fantastic first set, in my opinion.

"In the second set, I think Roger didn't fight as usual. He probably had some problems and he didn't feel comfortable enough to keep fighting.

"But my movements were much, much better than yesterday, so I'm very happy with that. After a long match yesterday, it was good to be able to compete well the next day."

The 26-year-old will be appearing in his eighth consecutive semi-final at Indian Wells and is now 4.50 to go on and win the tournament while Andy Murray is available at 4.50 to triumph and Novak Djokovic at 1.83.

Meanwhile, in the women's event, Maria Sharapova set up a semi-final meeting with fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko by beating Sara Errani 7-6 6-2.

Caroline Wozniacki faces Angelique Kerber in the other last-four clash after the pair received walkovers when Victoria Azarenka and Sam Stosur both withdrew from their respective quarter-finals.
