Ferdinand to link up with England

Rio Ferdinand was not included in the England squad for Euro 2012.

rio-ferdinand-2Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that Rio Ferdinand will link up with the England squad next week even though he was shocked by the defender's call-up.

The 34-year-old former West Ham United and Leeds United player has won 81 caps for his country but had not played for England since the 2-2 draw against Switzerland 21 months ago.

Ferguson expressed surprise when Roy Hodgson included Ferdinand in his squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro but will not withdraw the player from the games.

He confirmed after United's 1-0 victory against Reading: "Rio will join up with England."

England are 10.00 to thrash San Marino 7-0 on 22nd March and 4.50 to be winning the Group H clash 3-0 at half time.

Meanwhile, Ferguson insists his players will not relax even though the victory against the Royals, coupled with Manchester City's 2-0 defeat at Everton, leaves United 15 points clear at the top of the table with only nine games of the season remaining.

The Scot added: "You don't get points or medals for being complacent and we won't be.

"Most of the time we have been playing well this season, but the 15 points we are ahead isn't a reflection of the performance, it's from the previous six months really."
